Pool Prep, Repairs, Cracks, and Caulking

The most important step in any swimming pool painting project is what happens before the paint ever touches the surface. At NORTHCOAST Painting and Pressure Washing, we have learned over 26 years and more than 1,000 pool projects that proper surface preparation is the difference between a paint job that lasts and one that fails early.

We do not take shortcuts on prep work. Every pool we paint in Northeast Ohio receives a thorough inspection, cleaning, repair, and preparation process before any coating is applied.

Why Preparation Matters

Pool paint needs a clean, sound, and properly profiled surface to bond correctly. Paint applied over dirt, loose material, oil, algae, or deteriorated old paint will peel, blister, and flake — sometimes within the first season. Cracks and voids that are not repaired before painting will continue to grow beneath the new coating, causing visible damage and allowing water to penetrate behind the paint layer. Proper preparation takes time, but it is the single biggest factor in how long your pool paint job will last.

Our Preparation Process

Draining and Initial Assessment

We begin by fully draining the pool and allowing the surface to dry. Once drained, we conduct a detailed visual inspection of the entire pool shell — walls, floor, steps, benches, and all transition areas. We document any cracks, spalling, delamination, hollow spots, or areas where previous coatings have failed. This assessment guides the repair plan for your specific pool.

Pressure Washing and Surface Cleaning

All loose paint, dirt, algae, calcium deposits, and debris are removed through high-pressure washing. This step removes surface contaminants that would prevent proper paint adhesion. For pools with heavy mineral buildup or stubborn staining, we use appropriate cleaning solutions to bring the surface back to a clean, sound condition.

Crack Repair

Cracks in concrete and plaster pools are extremely common in Northeast Ohio due to our freeze-thaw cycles. We repair cracks based on their type and severity. Hairline cracks may be filled with a compatible patching compound. Structural cracks or movement cracks require more extensive treatment, including routing, filling with flexible sealant or hydraulic cement, and smoothing. We do not simply paint over cracks — they will always come back if not addressed properly.

Caulking Expansion Joints

Most pools have expansion joints where the pool shell meets the deck, at steps and bench connections, and around returns and fittings. These joints must be properly caulked with a pool-rated, flexible sealant that can accommodate seasonal movement without cracking. Old, dried-out caulk is removed and replaced before painting to prevent water infiltration behind the paint surface.

Patching and Skim Coating

Areas with spalled concrete, delaminated plaster, or rough texture are patched and skim-coated to create a smooth, uniform surface. This not only improves the appearance of the finished paint job but also extends its life by eliminating thin spots and high points where the coating would wear through first.

Surface Profiling

Once all repairs are complete, the surface is etched or sanded to create the proper profile for paint adhesion. Different paint systems require different surface profiles, and we match our preparation to the specific coating being used on your pool.

Common Pool Surface Problems We Fix

Across the pools we service in Stark, Summit, Cuyahoga, Medina, Tuscarawas, Wayne, Ashland, Portage, Mahoning, and Richland counties, we regularly encounter and repair spider cracking and map cracking in plaster, structural cracks from settling or frost heave, delaminated or hollow plaster, spalled and deteriorated concrete, failed previous paint jobs with peeling and blistering, rough texture from improper previous repairs, and staining from minerals, metals, and organic matter.
