Why Pool Owners Across Northeast Ohio Trust NORTHCOAST

Pool painting is not the same as painting a house or a commercial building. The surface is submerged in chemically treated water, exposed to UV, and subjected to freeze-thaw cycles every winter. If the preparation is not thorough or the coating is not applied correctly, the paint will fail within a season or two. That is why experience matters in this trade more than almost any other painting service.

NORTHCOAST has painted well over 1,000 swimming pools since entering the coatings business more than 26 years ago. We complete over 100 pool painting projects every year, which means our crews are not learning on the job — they are executing a proven process that has been refined over thousands of projects. We know how to evaluate a pool surface, choose the right coating system, prep the substrate properly, and apply the finish so it lasts.

Our Pool Painting Process

Every pool painting project we take on follows the same structured process. Cutting corners on any step leads to premature failure, and we do not cut corners.

1

Inspection & Estimate

We visit your property to evaluate the current condition of your pool surface, look at the existing coating, the substrate, any cracks or structural issues, and provide a detailed, written estimate at no cost.

2

Surface Preparation

The most critical step. We remove all loose and failing paint, clean the surface thoroughly, and prepare the substrate for proper coating adhesion through pressure washing, acid etching, sanding, or mechanical preparation.

3

Crack Repair & Patching

We address every crack, chip, spalling area, and damaged section before any coating is applied. We fill cracks, patch damaged concrete, re-caulk expansion joints, and smooth uneven surfaces.

4

Coating Application

We apply the selected pool coating with care and precision using high-quality pool paints designed specifically for submerged concrete surfaces, ensuring an even and consistent professional finish.

5

Final Walkthrough

We review the completed work to ensure the surface looks clean, even, and consistent. The pool paint requires a minimum cure time of 7 days for outdoor pools and 10 days for indoor pools before refilling.

Hot tub painting and resurfacing in Ohio

Hot Tub Painting and Resurfacing

In addition to swimming pools, we provide professional hot tub and spa resurfacing. Hot tub surfaces take a beating from high temperatures, concentrated chemicals, and constant use. If your hot tub surface is faded, chalky, rough, chipped, or peeling, we can prep and restore it using the same meticulous process we apply to swimming pools. Many customers choose to have their hot tub resurfaced at the same time as their pool for a cohesive finished look.

Pool Deck Coatings

The area around your pool matters just as much as the pool itself. A faded, worn, or slippery pool deck takes away from the overall appearance of your outdoor space. NORTHCOAST applies durable, non-slip pool deck coatings that protect the surface and improve both safety and curb appeal. Pool deck coatings are one of the most popular add-on services our customers request when having their pool painted.

Residential and Commercial Pool Painting

We serve both homeowners and commercial property owners throughout our Northeast Ohio service area. For residential projects, we restore backyard inground pools, attached hot tubs, spa areas, and pool decks. For commercial pool painting projects, we work with apartment complexes, hotels, motels, HOAs, fitness centers, swim clubs, country clubs, community pools, municipal aquatic centers, and other commercial or institutional properties with pool facilities. Commercial projects often require tighter timelines and coordination with property management — our crew capacity and experience allow us to handle these efficiently.

Why Choose NORTHCOAST for Your Pool Painting Project

Rubber and epoxy pool coatings

Choosing the Right Pool Coating

Not every pool coating is the same, and the right choice depends on the condition of your pool, the existing surface, what type of coating is already on the pool, and how the pool is used. NORTHCOAST works with both rubber-based and epoxy pool coatings, and we evaluate each pool individually before recommending a system.

Rubber-based pool coatings are a common choice for residential concrete pools in Northeast Ohio because they offer good flexibility through freeze-thaw cycles and perform well when applied over properly prepared, compatible surfaces. They are often a practical option when a pool has previously been painted with a compatible rubber-based coating that is still sound. However, rubber-based paint should not be applied over a pool that was previously painted with epoxy.

Epoxy pool coatings provide a harder, more chemical-resistant finish and are often used on commercial pools, bare concrete, or pools that already have a sound epoxy coating in place. Epoxy can be an excellent choice for the right surface and conditions, but epoxy should not be applied over a pool previously painted with rubber-based paint.

When a pool has an incompatible existing coating system, that coating must be fully removed and the surface properly prepared before a different system can be applied. Switching from rubber-based to epoxy, or from epoxy to rubber-based, is not as simple as recoating over the top. Proper identification of the existing coating is one of the most important parts of the evaluation process.

Choosing the wrong coating system is one of the most common reasons pool paint fails early. We evaluate every pool individually and recommend the coating that will perform best for the specific surface, existing coating condition, and use pattern. With over 1,000 pools completed, we have seen what works and what does not in Northeast Ohio's climate.

Groundwater and Pool Draining in Ohio

One of the most important steps in any pool painting project is draining the pool safely. In Northeast Ohio, groundwater levels can be high, especially in spring and after heavy rain. If a pool is drained when the water table is elevated, hydrostatic pressure from below can push against the empty pool shell and cause it to crack, shift, or even lift out of the ground.

Pool draining and caulking preparation

NORTHCOAST evaluates groundwater conditions before draining any pool. We check for signs of high water tables, assess recent rainfall, and take precautions to protect the pool structure throughout the painting process. In some cases, we use hydrostatic relief plugs or schedule the project during drier conditions to minimize risk.

Many pool owners are not aware of this risk, and not every contractor takes the time to assess it. Groundwater damage can be far more expensive to repair than the cost of the paint job itself. Our experience with over 100 pools per year across Northeast Ohio means we have dealt with every type of soil and groundwater condition the region can produce.

Typical Project Timeline

Every pool is different, but most residential pool painting projects follow a similar timeline. Understanding what to expect helps homeowners plan ahead and ensures the process goes smoothly.

Day 1

Pool is drained and initial cleaning begins. We assess the surface condition and confirm the scope of work.

Day 2

Surface preparation, including pressure washing, scraping, sanding, and removal of loose or failing paint.

Day 3

Crack repair, patching, caulking, and final surface prep. The pool is made ready for coating.

Day 4

First coat of pool paint is applied.

Day 5

Second coat is applied if required. Final walkthrough and inspection.

Days 6-12+

Cure time. Outdoor pools require a minimum of 7 days; indoor pools require 10 days before refilling.

Larger, more complex, or heavily damaged pools may take additional time. Commercial projects are scheduled based on the size and condition of the facility. We provide a clear timeline during the estimate so there are no surprises.
